Sleep My Darling, Peace Attend Thee

It's greatly flattering that my granddaughter has occasionally recently called for me to sing her to sleep.  Way back when she was a true baby, her mom and I routinely traded off with three or four standards, e.g., Twinkle, Twinkle and Hush Little Baby.

But the realm of tunes has greatly expanded in the last year, and the getting-to-bed process has not always been smooth.  Dad and grand-ma are in on the music too.  He has his own tunes, as does she.

Last night I bumbled through portions of Don't Fence Me In and El Paso (which great-grandma feels a little possessive over).  Tonight, unaware that my beloved had actually requested "difrent," (sic) I improvised for the first time on Four Strong Winds and Early Morning Rain, followed by encore Twinkle, Twinkle.  As far as I could tell she took that new music in quite happily.  I know better than to take it for granted that I will be on her play-list with any regularity, but I will be interested at the little one's reaction next time I have a chance to run those tunes by her.

What could be more fun than singing your grandchild to a sleepy state!
